Step-up SIP formula, with your numbers

Standard Formula
Each year the SIP rises by the step-up rate, and every instalment compounds for the months left after it is paid
Live Calculation (Plugging Your Values)
Starting monthly SIP (P):₹10,000
Annual step-up (g):10%
Expected return (r):12%
Total invested (Invested):₹19.12 L
Substituted Equation:
₹10,000 a month rising 10% a year for 10 years = ₹33.74 L
Maturity value:₹33.74 L

A step-up SIP raises the instalment once a year, usually in line with your salary. Because the later, larger instalments compound for less time, the extra corpus comes mostly from raising the amount early rather than steeply. The calculator runs each year's instalments separately rather than applying one average figure.

About Step-Up SIP Calculator

A Step-Up SIP calculator helps you estimate the future value of your SIP investments when you increase your investment amount periodically. This strategy helps you invest more as your income grows, maximizing the power of compounding over time.

How it Works

The Step-Up SIP calculator uses the following parameters:

  • Initial monthly SIP: the amount you invest each month in the first year (or first month, for a monthly step-up)
  • Step-Up Value: The increase in your investment (percentage or fixed amount)
  • Step-Up Frequency: How often you increase your investment (monthly or yearly)
  • Expected Return Rate: Annual expected return rate on your investment
  • Time Period: Investment duration in years

Benefits of Step-Up SIP

  • Align investments with growing income over time
  • Maximize wealth creation through increased contributions
  • Accelerate achievement of financial goals
  • Combat inflation by increasing investment amounts
  • Flexible options: choose percentage or fixed amount increases
  • Monthly or yearly step-up options to suit your needs

Example Scenarios

Yearly Step-Up with Percentage

Start a ₹10,000 monthly SIP and raise it by 10% every year, so it is ₹23,579 a month by year 10. At a 12% expected return, you invest ₹19.12 lakh over 10 years and it grows to about ₹33.74 lakh.

Monthly Step-Up with Fixed Amount

Start with ₹5,000 per month and increase by ₹100 every month. This gradual increase helps you consistently invest more without feeling the burden of a sudden jump in investment.

Step-Up SIP FAQs

What is a Step-Up (Top-Up) SIP?
A Step-Up SIP automatically raises your monthly mutual fund instalment each year by a fixed percentage (commonly 10%) or a fixed rupee amount, so your investing keeps pace with your salary instead of staying frozen at the amount you could afford on day one.
How much faster does a Step-Up SIP build wealth than a normal SIP?
Raising your contribution 10% a year builds roughly 70% more over 15 years and close to double over 20 years than a flat SIP at the same starting amount. A ₹10,000 SIP at 12% ends near ₹50 lakh flat versus about ₹87 lakh stepped up over 15 years. The gap widens sharply after year 7, once the stepped-up instalments are themselves large and have had time to compound.
What step-up percentage should I choose?
Match it to your realistic annual increment — 8%–10% suits most salaried investors. Setting a step-up above your actual raise means the SIP eventually outgrows your cash flow and you cancel it, which costs far more than a modest step-up would have gained.
Can I stop or reduce a Step-Up SIP later?
Yes. A step-up is just an instruction on the mandate — you can pause, reduce or cancel it at any time without penalty or exit load beyond the fund's normal terms. Units already bought are unaffected.
Do all AMCs support an automatic step-up or top-up mandate?
Most large fund houses do, but the terms differ. Some allow only a fixed rupee increase, others a percentage, and a few cap the step-up at 100% of the original instalment. The frequency is usually annual, though half-yearly is offered by some. You normally have to select top-up at the time of registering the SIP; adding it to a running SIP often means cancelling and registering a fresh one. Check the AMC's SIP form before assuming it is available.
Will my NACH mandate limit block the stepped-up instalment in later years?
It can, and this is the most common reason a step-up SIP quietly fails. The NACH or e-mandate you sign carries a maximum debit amount, and once the stepped-up instalment crosses it the bank rejects the debit. A SIP of Rs 10,000 rising 10% a year reaches about Rs 34,500 by year 14, so register the mandate for a generous ceiling such as Rs 50,000 at the start. The mandate limit is only a permission, not an instruction to debit that amount.
