Employer PF up to 12% of basic and gratuity are part of CTC but are never taxed as salary, so they are removed before tax is worked out. Defaults: PF 12% of basic, gratuity 4.81% of basic.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is salary up to ₹12.75 Lakh completely tax-free in FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28)?
Yes. For salaried resident individuals in FY 2026-27, a gross salary up to ₹12,75,000 attracts ₹0 effective tax under the New Tax Regime. The ₹75,000 standard deduction under Section 16(ia) reduces taxable income to ₹12,00,000. The calculated slab tax of ₹60,000 is then 100% absorbed by the Section 87A tax rebate.
How does Section 87A marginal relief work if taxable income slightly exceeds ₹12 Lakhs?
Under Section 87A marginal relief for FY 2026-27, if your taxable income exceeds ₹12,00,000 by an amount ₹X, your total tax liability cannot exceed ₹X. For example, on a taxable income of ₹12,10,000 (exceeding by ₹10,000), the normal slab tax would be ₹61,500. Marginal relief caps your tax liability to exactly ₹10,000 plus 4% cess, saving you ₹51,500 in tax cliff penalties.
What are the official New Tax Regime income tax slabs for FY 2026-27?
Under Section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (earlier Section 115BAC) for FY 2026-27, the slabs are: ₹0 to ₹4,00,000 = Nil (0%); ₹4,00,001 to ₹8,00,000 = 5%; ₹8,00,001 to ₹12,00,000 = 10%; ₹12,00,001 to ₹16,00,000 = 15%; ₹16,00,001 to ₹20,00,000 = 20%; ₹20,00,001 to ₹24,00,000 = 25%; Above ₹24,00,000 = 30%.
Does Section 87A rebate apply to LTCG (Section 112A) or STCG (Section 111A) in New Regime?
No. As per CBDT statutory provisions and judicial precedents, the Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 applies strictly against tax computed on normal slab income. It cannot be set off against special-rate tax liabilities, specifically Long-Term Capital Gains under Section 112A (taxed at 12.5%) or Short-Term Capital Gains under Section 111A (taxed at 20%).
How can salaried employees save additional tax beyond ₹12.75 Lakhs in New Regime?
Salaried employees can reduce taxable income beyond ₹12.75 Lakhs using Section 80CCD(2) employer contributions to the National Pension System (NPS), deductible up to 14% of Basic Salary + DA (for central/state government) and up to 14% for private sector employees. This deduction is fully permitted in the New Tax Regime, subject to the ₹7.5 lakh a year combined limit on employer contributions to PF, NPS and superannuation.
What is the exact tax calculation on a ₹15 Lakh gross salary in FY 2026-27?
For ₹15,00,000 of salary income (what remains of CTC after employer PF and gratuity): (1) Less Standard Deduction ₹75,000 = Taxable Income of ₹14,25,000. (2) Slabs: up to ₹4L = Nil; ₹4L-₹8L @ 5% = ₹20,000; ₹8L-₹12L @ 10% = ₹40,000; ₹12L-₹14.25L @ 15% = ₹33,750. Total Base Tax = ₹93,750. (3) Health & Education Cess @ 4% = ₹3,750. Final Net Tax Payable = ₹97,500.
