Projected with the EPS wage ceiling held at ₹25,000 (in effect from 17 September 2026). The ceiling is revised from time to time — it stood at ₹15,000 from 2014 until this change — and each rise moves a little more of the employer’s 12% into EPS, so a long projection is on the optimistic side.

EPF Interest & Corpus Formula

Standard Formula
Each month: Balance = Balance + C/12, and interest = Balance × r/12. Each year: Closing EPF = Opening Balance + Yearly Contributions (C) + the twelve months' interest, credited at year end
Live Calculation (Plugging Your Values)
Opening Balance (OB):₹1.00 L
Monthly Basic (B):₹50,000
Salary Growth (g):5%
EPFO Interest Rate (r):8.25% p.a.
Substituted Equation:
Closing EPF = ₹1.00 L + Contributions + Interest @ 8.25%
Projected EPF Corpus:₹3.75 Cr

About Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Calculator

The Employees' Provident Fund is a retirement savings scheme run by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Every month you and your employer each usually contribute 12% of your basic pay plus dearness allowance. All of your share goes into your EPF account, while part of your employer's goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS). The interest rate is recommended each year by EPFO's Central Board of Trustees and notified after the Ministry of Finance approves it.

This calculator projects your EPF balance at retirement. It raises your basic pay once a year by the growth rate you enter, adds both contributions every month, and works out interest on each month's balance at the rate you enter, credited once a year. It covers the EPF account only: the EPS pension, voluntary contributions, withdrawals and tax are not included.

How it Works

The calculator takes six inputs:

  • Current Age and Retirement Age: contributions run for every year in between.
  • Monthly Basic Salary (Basic + DA): your pay today. Both contributions are worked out from this amount.
  • Current EPF Corpus Balance: what is already in your account. It earns interest from the first year.
  • Expected Annual Salary Growth: how much your basic pay rises each year; the contributions rise with it.
  • EPFO Interest Rate (Annual): the rate credited each year. Change it to see the effect of a lower or higher rate.

Benefits of EPF

  • Your employer adds to it: every month your employer contributes alongside your own 12%.
  • Interest on interest: each year's interest is added to the balance and earns interest from then on, so the longer you stay in, the faster it grows.
  • It moves with you: your Universal Account Number (UAN) stays the same when you change jobs.
  • Room to save more: you can choose to contribute more than 12% of your pay.

EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) FAQs

What is the current EPF interest rate in India?
The EPF rate is declared by EPFO each year and is currently 8.25% per annum. Interest is computed on the monthly running balance and credited to the account once a year.
How is the employee and employer EPF contribution split?
The employee contributes 12% of Basic + DA to EPF. The employer also contributes 12%, but that 12% is split: 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the rest to EPF. The EPS share is calculated only on wages up to the statutory ceiling, raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 with effect from 17 September 2026, so EPS is capped at about ₹2,083 a month. Above that ceiling the balance of the employer's 12% flows into EPF, which is why the employer's EPF share is not a flat 3.67% of full basic pay. At a ₹50,000 basic, the employer puts about ₹3,918 into EPF and ₹2,083 into EPS.
Is EPF interest tax-free?
EPF withdrawal is tax-free after 5 continuous years of service. Interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year (₹5 lakh where the employer does not contribute) is taxable under Section 10(11)/(12).
What happens to EPF when I change jobs?
Transfer the balance to the new employer using your UAN rather than withdrawing — withdrawal before 5 years is taxable and breaks the continuity that keeps later withdrawals exempt. A transferred account carries its service history forward for the 5-year test.
How do I withdraw EPF online and how long does it take?
Log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN, make sure your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account are seeded and KYC is approved, then file the claim under Online Services. Settlement is normally credited in 7 to 20 days. The usual rejections are a name mismatch against Aadhaar, a missing date of exit that only your ex-employer can update, and an unverified bank account. Fix KYC before you file rather than after a rejection.
What is the difference between Form 19, Form 10C and Form 31?
Form 19 withdraws the EPF balance itself and is used when you leave service and do not plan to transfer. Form 10C claims the Employees Pension Scheme portion, either as a withdrawal benefit if your service is under 10 years or as a scheme certificate to carry the service forward. Form 31 is an advance against your own EPF while still employed, for a house, marriage, education or medical need. All three are filed online through the UAN portal.
What happens to EPS if I leave before 10 years, and how do I merge two UANs?
Under 10 years of pensionable service you can take the EPS money out as a withdrawal benefit using Form 10C, calculated from a table based on your service and last wage, not your actual balance. Cross 10 years and withdrawal stops being an option and a lifetime pension from 58 begins instead, so it is usually worth taking a scheme certificate rather than cashing out. Two UANs are merged by filing a transfer request, after which EPFO deactivates the old one.
