Growth over time

The gap between the two lines is the interest earned — and it widens every year.

The formula, with your numbers

Standard Formula
A = P × (1 + i) × [(1 + i)^N − 1] ÷ i, where i = r ÷ n and N = n × t
Live Calculation (Plugging Your Values)
Monthly NPS Contribution (P):₹10,000
Interest rate (r):10%
Compounded (n):monthly (12 times a year)
Time (t):30 years
Rate per period (i):0.008333333333
Number of periods (N):360
Total you will have invested (C):₹36,00,000
Interest earned (I):₹1,91,93,253
Substituted Equation:
₹10,000 × (1 + 0.008333333333) × [(1 + 0.008333333333)^360 − 1] ÷ 0.008333333333 = ₹2,27,93,253
Maturity value:₹2,27,93,253

Each instalment compounds only for the time left after you pay it, so the first one earns far more than the last. The calculator steps through every instalment separately rather than applying one rate to the total, which is why the interest is lower than a single lump sum of the same size would earn.

About National Pension System (NPS) Calculator

The National Pension System is a retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Indian citizens, resident or non-resident, and Overseas Citizens of India can join. Money in your Tier I account, the retirement account, is invested by a pension fund you choose in equity, corporate bonds and government securities, so the return depends on the markets and is not guaranteed.

This calculator projects the Tier I corpus built by a fixed monthly contribution, growing at the return you assume and compounded monthly. It stops at the corpus: it does not split it into a lump sum and an annuity, estimate a pension, deduct fund charges or work out tax. The withdrawal rules are in the FAQs below.

How it Works

The calculator takes three inputs:

  • Monthly NPS Contribution: the amount you put into your Tier I account each month. It stays the same for the whole period.
  • Expected Annual Return (Equity + Debt): your own assumption for the mix of equity and debt you hold. NPS does not promise a rate, so try a lower figure as well.
  • Time Period: the number of years you will keep contributing, from 1 to 45.

Benefits of NPS

  • Your choice of fund and mix: pick any PFRDA-registered pension fund, and either set the split between equity, corporate bonds and government securities yourself or take the auto option, which lowers equity as you age.
  • One account wherever you work: it stays the same when you change jobs or move to another city.
  • No upper limit: you can contribute as much as you like.
  • Tax relief, depending on your regime: your employer's contribution qualifies for a deduction, within a cap, under both the new and old regimes; your own contributions qualify only under the old regime.

National Pension System (NPS) FAQs

What returns does NPS give?
NPS is market-linked, so returns depend on your asset mix. Equity (Scheme E) has historically delivered 10%–12% over long periods, corporate bonds (Scheme C) 8%–9%, and government securities (Scheme G) 7%–8%. Fund management charges are among the lowest of any Indian investment product, at roughly 0.09%.
What are the tax benefits of investing in NPS Tier 1 in India?
It depends on your regime. Under the New Regime — the default — the only NPS deduction left is Section 80CCD(2) on your employer's contribution, up to 14% of salary (basic plus dearness allowance, not your whole CTC). Under the Old Regime you also get Section 80CCD(1) within the ₹1.5 lakh 80C ceiling and an extra ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B), while 80CCD(2) is capped at 10% for private employers and 14% for government ones. So a salaried person on the New Regime cannot claim the ₹50,000 that most NPS advertising still leads with.
What are the withdrawal rules at age 60 for NPS?
Under the PFRDA exit rules amended on 16 December 2025, a non-government subscriber (all-citizen or corporate) must use at least 20% of the Tier 1 corpus to buy an annuity from an empanelled insurer, and may take the rest as a lump sum or as systematic withdrawals. Central and state government employees must still annuitise at least 40%. If the total corpus is Rs 8 lakh or less you may withdraw all of it; between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh the lump sum is capped at Rs 6 lakh and the balance goes into systematic unit redemption over at least six years or an annuity. The tax rule has not moved with the exit rule: Section 10(12A) (now Schedule II, Sl. No. 6 of the Income-tax Act, 2025) still exempts only 60% of the corpus, so anything withdrawn above that is taxed at your slab rate. The purchase of the annuity is not taxed, but the pension it pays afterwards is taxable at your slab rate every year, which the headline "tax-free NPS" claim leaves out. You may defer the annuity purchase or the lump sum until age 85.
How is NPS different from Atal Pension Yojana (APY)?
NPS is market-linked with flexible contributions for all citizens, while APY provides a fixed, guaranteed pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per month for subscribers aged 18–40.
Which pension fund manager should I choose, and can I switch later?
All PFMs invest within the same tightly defined mandate, so long-run differences are small — pick on consistent five-year and ten-year returns rather than last year's topper. You may change your PFM once a year and your asset allocation four times a year, both free and done online through the CRA. Because the switch happens inside the NPS account, there is no tax event and no exit load, unlike moving between mutual funds.
Should I use Active choice or Auto choice in NPS?
Active choice lets you set the mix yourself, with equity capped at 75% until 50 and tapering after that. Auto choice runs a lifecycle glide path for you: Aggressive starts at 75% equity, Moderate at 50% and Conservative at 25%, each stepping down automatically with age. Take Active if you will actually review the allocation once a year. Take Auto if you will not, because an unreviewed Active portfolio is the more common mistake.
What happens if I exit NPS before 60?
A non-government subscriber may now exit on the normal terms after 15 years of subscription, even before 60. Leaving earlier than that — or, for a government employee, resigning before superannuation — reverses the split: at most 20% comes to you as a lump sum and at least 80% must buy an annuity. If the corpus is Rs 5 lakh or less you can take the whole amount. That 80% rule is why NPS should be treated as a genuine retirement account and not a flexible investment — the money is effectively converted into a small lifetime pension rather than returned to you.
