How it Works
The SIP calculator uses the following parameters:
- Investment Amount: The amount you invest monthly
- Expected Return Rate: Annual expected return rate on your investment
- Time Period: Investment duration in years
SIP Formula
FV = P × ((1 + r)^n - 1) × (1 + r)/r
Where:
FV = Future Value
P = Investment Amount
r = Interest Rate per payment period
n = Total Number of Payments
Benefits of SIP
- Disciplined investing through regular contributions
- Benefit from rupee cost averaging
- Power of compounding over long-term
- Lower risk through systematic investing
- Flexibility to start with small amounts
SIP Investment FAQs
How is SIP return calculated in mutual funds?
SIP returns use the future value of an annuity-due formula: M = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly investment, i is the monthly rate of return (annual rate / 12 / 100), and n is the total number of instalments.
What is a good expected return rate for an equity mutual fund SIP in India?
Diversified Indian equity funds have historically delivered 12%–15% CAGR over 10-year-plus horizons. Use 12% for planning: it is close to the long-run Nifty 50 total return and leaves room for a weaker decade. Past returns are not guaranteed.
Can I increase my SIP amount every year?
Yes. A Step-Up (Top-Up) SIP raises your instalment by a fixed percentage or rupee amount each year, usually timed to your appraisal. Raising a SIP 10% a year typically builds a 50%–80% larger corpus over 15–20 years than a flat SIP.
What happens if I miss a SIP instalment?
Nothing is charged by the fund house — the instalment is simply skipped. Your bank may levy an ECS/NACH bounce fee of ₹100–₹750. Most AMCs cancel the mandate after three consecutive failed instalments, so restart it before that.
Can I pause or stop a SIP midway, and what happens to the units already bought?
You can stop a SIP any time by cancelling the mandate on the AMC or RTA site; most fund houses also allow a pause of one to six months. Give the instruction about 10-15 working days before the next debit date or one more instalment will go through. Units already bought stay invested and keep growing — stopping a SIP only stops fresh purchases, it does not redeem anything. In ELSS the units keep their own three-year lock-in.
Why does the XIRR on my statement differ from the return this calculator shows?
This calculator assumes one steady rate applied to every instalment, so it reports a flat annual return. XIRR on your CAS or AMC statement solves for the one rate that fits your actual cash flows with their real dates — missed instalments, extra lumpsums, partial redemptions and the exact NAV on each debit. Because real markets are uneven, XIRR is the honest figure for what you earned; treat the calculator's number as a planning estimate, not a report card.
What happens if my SIP date falls on a Sunday or a bank holiday?
The debit and the purchase simply move to the next working day, and you get that day's NAV. Nothing is missed and no penalty applies. Units are allotted on the day the money actually reaches the fund house, so a holiday can shift your NAV by a day or two in either direction. Over a 10 or 15 year SIP these shifts cancel out, which is why picking the 5th over the 10th makes no meaningful difference to the final corpus.
