Car On-Road Price & Loan EMI FAQs
What is the difference between Ex-Showroom Price and On-Road Price?
Ex-Showroom price is the base manufacturing price set by car makers. On-Road price is the final mandatory cost required to legally drive the car, adding state RTO road tax, motor insurance, TCS tax (if >₹10L), FASTag, and registration charges.
How is state RTO road tax calculated on new cars in India?
Road tax is a state levy, charged as a percentage of the ex-showroom price and paid once at registration. It runs from about 4% to 20% depending on the state, the fuel type and the price bracket, which is why the same car costs noticeably more in Karnataka or Maharashtra than in Delhi or Chandigarh. Most states charge a higher rate above ₹10,00,000, many discount CNG, and several waive it entirely on electric vehicles.
Why is 1% TCS tax added on cars costing over ₹10 Lakhs?
Under Section 206C(1F) of the Income Tax Act, a mandatory 1% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) applies to car sales exceeding ₹10 Lakhs. This 1% TCS can be claimed as a tax credit when filing your ITR.
Is 3-year motor insurance mandatory for new cars in India?
Yes, per Supreme Court and IRDAI directives, all new private cars sold in India must carry a mandatory 3-year third-party insurance cover bundled with a 1-year own damage (OD) cover.
Can I get 100% on-road price financing for a car loan?
Some leading banks offer up to 100% on-road funding for salaried borrowers with high CIBIL scores (750+), though standard car loans typically finance 85% to 90% of ex-showroom price.
Why does the same car cost less in Delhi or Chandigarh than in Karnataka or Maharashtra?
Road tax is a state subject, so the same ex-showroom price attracts very different one-time levies. Karnataka charges among the highest at roughly 13% to 20% depending on price band, Maharashtra 11% to 13% with a further 2% on diesel, while Delhi is about 4% to 12.5% and Chandigarh lower still. On a Rs 15 lakh ex-showroom car the gap between Delhi and Bengaluru can exceed Rs 1.5 lakh on the on-road price, before insurance and registration.
Do I pay road tax again if I move states, and how does the refund work?
Yes. If you keep the vehicle in a new state for more than 12 months you must re-register it there and pay that state road tax afresh, after getting an NOC from the original RTO. You can then claim a proportionate refund of the unused portion from the first state using Form 16 with the original tax receipt and the new RC. In practice refunds are slow and partial. A BH series registration, available to eligible employees, avoids the whole problem by charging tax in two-year blocks valid nationwide.
